1. Elisabeth Borne has been appointed as the new prime minister of France.

A) Borne held the post of labour minister in the previous government of French President Emmanuel Macron. She succeeds Jean Castex after he resigned from this post.

B) She becomes the second woman in the history of France to hold this post.

2. Indian Navy to test US F-18 fighters for INS Vikrant next week.

A) The Indian Navy will start the flight trials of Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet carrier based multi-role fighters at the shore-based test facility (SBTF) at INS Hansa in Goa from May 23 as the US aircraft is one of the contenders for 26 fighters onboard soon to be commissioned INS Vikrant indigenous aircraft carrier.

B) Both the Super Hornet and Rafale-M can be used in either INS Vikrant or INS Vikramaditya, which use short take-off but arrested recovery (STOBAR) technology for launch and landing of aircraft from an aircraft carrier. This technology is also used by Russian and Chinese aircraft carriers.

3. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is poised to become the most valuable US startup.

A) In the capital-intensive business, SpaceX has raised $337.4 million in December and $1.16 billion in equity financing last April, according to regulatory filings.

B) The company competes with former Amazon.com Chief Executive Jeff Bezos’s space venture Blue Origin and billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic in the burgeoning constellation of commercial rocket ventures. 

4. Govt backs provision of Succession law that prioritises husband’s kin.

A) Under the law, when a Hindu man dies, the properties left behind by him are to be distributed equally among his wife, children and his mother.

B) The Union government has defended in the Supreme Court a provision in succession law that puts the husband’s family first in the line of inheritance, before the woman’s own parents, if she died without executing a will.

5. Sweden, Finland jointly submitted their applications to become NATO members.

A) Finland, which was invaded by the then Soviet Union in 1939 – the same year when Germany’s invasion of Poland started the Second World War, shares a 1,300-km border with Russia. Sweden shares a maritime boundary with Russia.

B) The two Nordic nations have remained non-aligned throughout the entire Cold War period, and have in the past opposed the prospect of becoming NATO members. However, both Niinisto and Andersson have cited security as the reason behind their NATO aspirations.

6. Chandigarh to get a dedicated Anti-Narcotic Task Force.

A) The Anti-Narcotic Task Force will be headed by an inspector general-rank officer; a dedicated anti-dark net cell will also be constituted to check dark web drug trade in Chandigarh.

B) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will provide a dedicated control room number to deal with complaints of drug smuggling. Besides, drug smuggling prone routes and borders of the city will be patrolled by police regularly.

7. Forbes’ recently released the annual ranking of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

A) Lionel Messi topped the Forbes list for the second time (the first was in 2019).

B) USD 130 million in pre-tax gross earnings during the past 12 months ending May 1st, 2022. Although Messi’s salary was reduced in recent times, a major boost in endorsements led him to top the list. Messi earned USD 75 million through salary and USD 55 million through endorsements.

8. India created history by winning the Thomas Cup title for the first time.

A) It is an international badminton competition among men’s teams of various countries of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). It is also known as the World Men’s Team Championships.

B) India defeated Indonesia in the Thomas cup finals by 3-0. The Indonesian team is the defending champion

C) Indonesia is the most successful team, as it won the Thomas cup 14 times. China comes second with 10 titles. Malaysia is ranked third with 5 titles.
