1. The glow after an epic cosmic event known as a “kilonova” was observed by astronomers.
A) Kilonovas occur when two ultra-dense neutron stars collide, which are the remains of stars that died in supernova explosions.
B) The team that discovered this phenomenon suggested that as the debris from the collision expanded, the sonic boom-like shock heated the material around it, producing X-rays.
C) An afterglow in the X-rays from the event, called GW170817, was observed by astronomers.
2. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) celebrated its 50th anniversary.
A) Its headquarter is in Nairobi, Kenya.
B) At the recently concluded United Nations Environment Assembly, 175 countries supported a landmark resolution to end plastic waste by forming an intergovernmental committee to finalize and negotiate a legally binding agreement by 2024.
C) ‘Strengthening UNEP to implement the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’ is the theme of the UNEP@50 programme.
D) These events are being organized to recognize the progress made on global environmental matters and to address the challenges facing the planet.
3. The International Financial Services Centers Authority (IFSCA) invites the public to comment on the “Structural and Sustainable Framework by Financial Institutions” at IFSC.
A) The International Financial Services Centers Authority was set up by the central government to regulate all financial services in International Financial Services Centers (IFSCs).
B) Its headquarter is in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
C) IFSCA consists of nine members including the Chairman of the Authority, one member each from RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, PFRDA, two members from the Ministry of Finance and two other members appointed on the recommendation of the selection committee.
4. The Ministry of Tourism instituted the Swadesh Darshan Awards in various categories to acknowledge the efforts made by the State Governments, Union Territory Administrations and various implementing agencies.

5. The Convention on Cluster Weapons (CCM) is an international treaty that prohibits all use, transfer, production and storage of cluster bombs.

C) Since cluster munitions are non-precision weapons and they release many small bombs over a large area which can kill civilians indiscriminately.
6. A thermobaric weapon is one of the most destructive weapons because they cause significantly more destruction than a conventional bomb of comparable size.
A) A thermobaric weapon uses oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion.
B) These weapons work in two phases, the first detonation is to open the fuel container of the bomb and the second detonation is to create an aerosol cloud that can cause massive destruction.
7. Canada decided to impose a digital services tax on large companies selling various services in Canada.
A) Under the new rule of the Government of Canada, companies will be levied a 3 per cent digital services tax.
B) The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has opposed this new tax, arguing that it would be particularly beneficial to the larger U.S. government targeting technology businesses.
8. Kaliyattam festival is an annual Theyyam festival held in the temples of the Malabar region of Kerala.
