In this blog, we will talk about the smart city awards 2020 which were declared by the Central Government on 15 June, 2021. We will discuss in detail about the smart city mission, theme of this year, the states which won awards and other important facts.
Let’s first know about the Smart City Mission
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the mission on 25 June, 2015. The aim behind the mission is to promote the cities that offer a decent quality of life to their citizens through application of smart solutions. The mission focuses on economic growth. The quality of life is expected to improve through work on social, economic, physical and institutional pillars of the city. Under the mission, 100 cities were selected to be developed as smart cities through a two staged competition.
Smart City Awards 2020
Theme
The winners were decided on the theme of Social Aspects, Culture, Urban Environment, Sanitation, Economy, Built Environment, water, Urban Mobility. This year other themes were added for Sustainable Business model of ICCC (Integrated Command and Control Centre) and Innovation Award especially in COVID Management
The award was declared on completion of six years of Smart cities Mission.
Best Cities: Surat (Gujarat); Indore (Madhya Pradesh)
Best States: Uttar Pradesh followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Best UT: Chandigarh
Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework: 4-star Rating was awarded to Surat, Indore, Ahmedabad, Pune, Vijayawada, Rajkot, Visakhapatnam, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Vadodara.
Smart Cities Leadership Award: Ahmedabad followed by Varanasi and Ranchi.

Tulip Report
TULIP – The Urban Learning Internship Program was launched on 4 June, 2020. It is a platform to connect graduates to Smart cities and Urban Local Bodies to co-create new solutions for the cities.
More than 16,500 internships have been posted. 1220 internships are going on and 467 have already been completed.
