In this blog, we will talk about the initiative taken by Indian against single use plastic. We will be discussing in detail about the Plastic Hackathon campaign undertaken by the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.
About the Hackathon 2021
It was launched on the occasion of World Oceans Day, June 8.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), Prakash Javedkar launched a 2-month Awareness Campaign on Single-Use Plastic (SUP) & India Plastic Challenge – Hackathon 2021. In 2019, the Government of India set a target of phasing out Single-Use Plastic (SUP) by 2022.
GIZ, UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry along with the ministry launched the campaign. While GIZ and UNEP are knowledge partners, FICCI is the industry partner of the initiative.
Themes:
The India Plastic Challenge – Hackathon 2021 includes two tracks:
Track 1 – Digital Solutions for Plastic Waste
It aims to effectively track and monitor waste
Track 2 – Elimination of Single-Use Plastics
This aims to provide affordable alternatives and to reduce dependence on plastics.
Objective
It is a campaign to encourage entrepreneurs/start-ups and students at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to reduce plastic pollution through innovative solutions. It aims to find alternatives to single use plastics and identifying ideas to manage plastic waste.
Events
The 2-month long awareness programme consists of 4 online regional events and a social media campaign to spread the message of lessening plastic pollution.
A Pan-India Essay Writing competition for school students across India was announced to spread awareness on Plastic pollution.
What does the programme offer for the people taking part in the competition?
Half-day workshops on designing business care. Coaching and mentoring sessions with the industry executives followed by pitching and award ceremony.
Prizes: Top three winners from each track to get cash awards.
Initiatives taken by India to control plastic pollution
- Import of plastic waste is already banned in India. Many states have stopped using SUP.
- Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016 has been notified for handling plastic waste in an environmentally sound manner. It was amended on March 11, 2021 thereby prohibiting SUP items.
- Plastic below 40 microns thickness is banned under the plastic waste management rules, 2016.
