Recently, the Narendra Modi government underwent a major overhaul with the induction of 43 new ministers in the Cabinet. Out of these 43 ministers, 15 are Union Ministers and the rest are Ministers of State. In today’s blog, we will look at all the newly appointed Union Ministers along with their portfolios.
Highlights
- A total of 43 ministers have taken oath as Council Ministers in the recent Union Cabinet reshuffle.
- Of these 43 ministers, 15 are Cabinet ministers and 28 are Ministers of State.
- 12 ministers resigned including IT and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
- Jyotiraditya Scindia, Bhupender Yadav, Anupriya Patel, Shobha Karandlaje, Ajay Bhatt, Anurag Thakur among others have been included in the government.
- Seven ministers of state have been promoted and have been given Cabinet rank. These include Anurag Thakur, Kiren Rijiju, G Kishan Reddy, RK Singh, Mansukh Mandaviya, Hardeep Singh Puri and Parshottam Rupala.
- After this revamp, the Union Council of Ministers now has seven more women members, taking their overall strength to 11.
- The new Ministry of Cooperation was introduced and would be headed by Home Minister Amit Shah.
- The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Darbar Hall at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

1. Narayan Tatu Rane – Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises
Narayan Tatu Rane is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra. He is currently serving as the Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of India. He was a Cabinet Minister for Industry, Port, Employment and Self-employment in the Government of Maharashtra.
2. Sarbananda Sonowal- Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; and Minister of AYUSH
Sarbananda Sonowal, 58-year-old, is a 2-time Lok Sabha MP from Assam. Having been a 2-time MLA, he served as Assam’s popular Chief Minister from 2016-21. He has earlier served as Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship; and Sports and Youth Affairs under PM Narendra Modi.
3. Dr. Virendra Kumar- Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment
Dr. Virendra Kumar is a Lok Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh, serving his 7th term as MP. He is one of the senior-most Parliamentarians. He has in the past served as Union Minister of State for Women & Child Development and Minority Affairs under PM Narendra Modi.
4. Jyotiraditya M Scindia- Minister of Civil Aviation
Jyotiraditya M Scindia is a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh, serving his 5th term as MP. He has been Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Union Minister of State for Commerce & Communications in earlier Governments. Coming from an illustrious royal lineage, he has been in public life for over 2 decades. Scindia has also previously held the responsibility as President of Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association.
5. Ramchandra Prasad Singh- Minister of Steel
Ramchandra Prasad Singh is a Rajya Sabha MP for Bihar serving his 2nd term as MP. He is a retired IAS officer of the 1984 batch, having served over 25 years across various capacities and domains.
6. Ashwini Vaishnaw- Minister of Railways; Minister of Communications; and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology
Ashwini Vaishnaw is a Rajya Sabha MP for Odisha. A former IAS Officer of the 1994 batch, he handled important responsibilities over 15 years and was particularly known for his contribution to the PPP framework in Infrastructure. Vaishnaw rose to prominence through his meticulous service when the state was hit by a super cyclone in 1999.
7. Pashu Pati Kumar Paras- Minister of Food Processing Industries
Pashu Pati Kumar Paras is the Lok Sabha MP for Hajipur in Bihar. He has been a 7-time MLA and 1-time MLC in Bihar, making him one of India’s senior-most State legislators. He was Minister for Animal and Fish Resources Department in the Government of Bihar.
8. Kiren Rijiju- Minister of Law and Justice
Kiren Rijiju is an Indian lawyer and politician from Arunachal Pradesh. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rijiju is the current Minister of Law and Justice in the Second Modi ministry. He was earlier Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports and also Minister of State for Home Affairs in the past.
9. Raj Kumar Singh- Minister of Power and New Renewable Energy
Raj Kumar Singh is a former Indian bureaucrat and a current Union Cabinet Minister in the Government of India. He is a Member of the Indian Parliament for Arrah, Bihar, since May 2014. He has been the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the central government, helping steer the power sector reforms agenda in the country.
10. Hardeep Singh Puri- Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas; and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs
Hardeep Singh Puri is an Indian politician, former diplomat who is the current Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs in India. He is a 1974 batch Indian Foreign Service officer who served as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013.
11. Mansukh Mandaviya- Minister of Health & Family Welfare India and Chemical and Fertilizers.
In 2019, Mandaviya took charge of the Shipping Ministry as Minister of State (Independent Charge). Mandaviya, who hails from Bhavnagar district in Gujarat, is a businessman, agriculturist, political and social worker. He is also a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat.
12. Bhupender Yadav: Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change; and Minister of Labour and Employment
Bhupender Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP for Rajasthan, serving his 2nd term. He is known for his leadership across many Parliamentary Committees. Prior to beginning his political career, he was an Advocate in the Supreme Court and also served as Government Counsel for important Commissions. Bhupender Yadav has been in public life for over 2 decades.
13. Parshottam Rupala- Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying
Parshottam Khodabhai Rupala is an Indian politician and Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the Second Modi ministry. He is a member of Rajya Sabha, representing the Indian state of Gujarat and a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party.
14. G. Kishan Reddy- Minister of Culture; Minister of Tourism; and Minister of Development of North Eastern Region
The 61-year-old is Minister of State for Home Affairs. He was elected as a Member of Parliament to the 17th Lok Sabha, in 2019, from Secunderabad Constituency, Telangana.
15. Anurag Singh Thakur- Minister of Information and Broadcasting; and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports
He is a member of the Lower House of Parliament in India from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, and the current Minister of Sports, Youth Affairs and Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
