Kalyan Singh was an Indian Politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for two times and as a member of Parliament. He is widely known for his role in paving the way for the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Family 

Kalyan Singh’s family was from the Lodhi Community. When Kalyan Singh was in school, he became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as a Swayamsevak or volunteer. His wife’s name is Ramwati Devi. His son Rajveer Singh is also a Politician as a member of Parliament and his grandson Sandeep Kumar Singh is also a Minister of State for Education of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

POLITICAL JOURNEY

First time Kalyan Singh entered the Uttar Pradesh legislature as a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Atrauli in 1967 and remained until 1980. He won nine more elections to that constituency as a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJP, the Janata Party and the Rashtriya Kranti Party. In 1991, he became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time, but in December 1992 he resigned the post after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. He again became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1997, but was removed by his party in 1999. Due to differences with BJP, he formed another party “Rashtriya Kranti Party”.

In 2004, he came back in BJP on the request of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Bulandshahr Lok Sabha constituency. Again in 2009, he left the BJP for a second time and successfully contested the 2009 Indian general election as an independent candidate from Etah. He joined BJP again in 2014, and he was appointed as Governor of Rajasthan, he served a five-year term, and re-entered active politics in 2019.  Also, he served as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh from 28 January 2015 to 12 August 2015.

He was the Chief Minister of UP, when thousands of ‘kar sevaks’ had gathered in the holy city of Ayodhya on 6 December 1992. On the demolition of the Babri Masjid structure, he said that “No regrets, no repentance, no sorrow, no grief” in an interview.

IMPORTANT DECISIONS

In 1991, the Babri Masjid was demolished as the Sangh Parivar campaign to build the temple at the same spot picked up momentum. As UP’s chief minister, Kalyan Singh had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, assuring that he will not permit any damage to the mosque. But he had also ordered police not to open fire at protesters, arguing later that any such action would have led to much bloodshed.

Admitting failure to protect the mosque, he resigned the same evening. The state assembly was dissolved as riots erupted at several places in the country.

In 1998, as a second time UP’s chief minister Kalyan Singh was addressing a public meeting in Amroha when he was informed that his government had been dismissed.

In 2014, in the first meeting of Kalyan Singh as the Governor of Rajasthan the vice chancellors had ordered them to adopt villages.

DEATH CAUSE

Kalyan Singh was admitted to SGPGI (Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences) in Lucknow, on July 4 in ICU in critical condition. He died due to multi-organ failure and Sepsis on 21 August.

On the demise of Kalyan Singh Rajasthan announces two-day state mourning on august 22 and 23. All state government offices and institutions will remain closed for two days.

On demise of Kalyan Singh Uttar Pradesh announces three-day state mourning. The cremation will take place in Narora, UP at Ganga Ghat on 23 august.
