International Day of Charity is a day celebrated annually on 5 September world wide. It was announced by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.

What does Charity really mean?
Charity is the notion of volunteerism and philanthropy that provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. Charity can reduce the worst effects of philanthropic crises, supplement public services in health care, education, accommodations and child protection. Charity assists in the development of science and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. It also encourages the rights of the disempowered and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict conditions.
Why International Day of Charity on 5 September?
The International Day of Charity was constructed with the goal of preparing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all over the world to help others through volunteer activities.
You all are well aware of the good works done by Mother Teresa. The date 5 September was chosen in order to memorialize the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa who got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty.
About Mother Teresa:
Mother Teresa was the renowned nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje, Macedonia in 1910. In 1928, she came to India, where she devoted herself to help the needy. She became an Indian citizen in 1948. She founded the order of Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata in 1950 and became well known for its work among the poor in the city.
For over 45 years she took care of the poverty-stricken, sick, orphaned and dying, while she was leading the Missionaries of Charity’s expansion, firstly in India and then expanded in other countries. Mother Teresa’s work has been acknowledged and complemented throughout the world. She has been awarded with a number of honours, awards including the Nobel Peace Prize. Mother Teresa died on 5 September 1997 at an age of 87.
How did the idea of celebrating International Day of Charity come about?
In gratitude for the role of charity in reducing crises and human hurtings within and among nations, in addition to the efforts of benevolent organizations and individuals, along with the work of Mother Teresa. Hence the General Assembly of the United Nations appointed 5 September as the International Day of Charity which was also the death anniversary of Mother Teresa.
