In this article, we will be diving into a state that was earlier a part of Andhra Pradesh- Telangana. This South Indian state is rich in art and infused with culture. Presently, we are going to talk about the cultural, geographical and political aspects of Telangana.

Why the state was named Telangana? What is the capital of Telangana? What is the total population of Telangana?

Telangana is the newly-formed Indian state with naturally pleasant sites mixed with manmade wonders. The state hosted many dynasties and empires which are depicted in form of the monuments and historical sites.

 Telangana is known as the region where the fusion of two cultures takes place namely North and South. The state has long been a meeting place for diverse languages and cultures. The state is known as “South of North and North of South“.

  • Telangana is a storehouse of creativity that is prevalent in its collection of art and craft. Dokra and Bidri crafts are famous arts of the state. These arts are used to make beautiful jewellery boxes, hukka, buttons and other things.
  • Telugu is the official language of Telangana and Urdu is the second official language of the state. About 77% of the population of Telangana speak Telugu, 12% speak Urdu and 11% other languages.
  • Telangana is well known for its weaving and dying techniques in India and its cotton producing units are world-famous. The most common attire worn by women in the state is saree and the famous sarees made in Telangana include Pochampally Saree and Gadwal Saree. Male clothing includes the traditional Dhoti which is also known as Pancha in Telangana.
  • Perini Siva Thandavam is an ancient dance form performed by males. This dance form is carried out by warriors before Lord Siva before going to the battlefield. This dance form is the state dance of Telangana.
  • The major religions of Telangana are Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity with Hinduism being the most followed religion among these.
  • Telugu cuisine is dominated by bajra, millet, and jowar. The flavours of this cuisine have been infused with Persian, Telugu, Marathwada, Turkish, and Mughal influences. Some most famous dishes of the state are Biryani, Haleem, Naan Qalia, Kebabs, Keema Samosa, MirchikaSalan, KhubanikaMeetha, and Lukhmi etc.
  • The major festivals of the state are Makara Sankranthi, Dasara, Deepavali and Ugadi, the Telugu New Year etc.

GEOGRAPHY Telangana GK Notes:

Telangana is India’s youngest state and was born on June 2, 2014, as the 29th state of India. Telangana is situated on the Deccan Plateau, in the central stretch of the eastern seaboard of the Indian Peninsula.

  • Area: 112,077 km²

Population rank in India: 12th

Latitude extent: 18.1124° N

Longitude extent: 79.0193° E

  • The state is surrounded by Maharashtra to the north, Chhattisgarh and Odisha to the northeast, Andhra Pradesh to the southeast and south, and Karnataka to the west.
  • The region is drained by two major rivers namely Godavari River catchment area and Krishna River catchment area.
  • In Telangana, there are 3 National parks, 9 Wildlife sanctuaries and 65 sacred groves.
  • The State has recorded a forest area of 24.00% of its geographical area. The Reserved, Protected and Unclassed Forests are 75.65%, 22.07% and 2.28% respectively, of recorded forest area.
  • The types of forests found in Telangana are Tropical moist deciduous forests, Southern dry deciduous forests, Northern mixed dry deciduous forests, Dry savannah forests and Tropical dry evergreen scrub.

Climate:

Telangana is a semi-arid area and majorly has a hot and dry climate. Telangana has 3 seasons: summer (from March to June); tropical rains (from July to September) and winter (from October to February). Summers peaks in May with average high temperatures in the 42 °C range. The annual rainfall is between 900 and 1500 mm in northern Telangana and 700 to 900 mm in southern Telangana. Winter is dry, mild with little humidity and average temperatures in the 22–23 °C range.

Soil Type:

Telangana contains various soil types namely red sandy loams, Red loamy sands, lateritic soils, salt-affected soils, alluvial soils, shallow to medium black soils and very deep black cotton soils.

GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS Telangana GK Notes:

Telangana is a constituent unit of the Republic of India, and governed by parliamentary system of representative democracy. A Governor is appointed by the president of India who is the executive head of the state administration and helped by Chief Minister and a Council of Ministers. The state has a bicameral legislature. The state judiciary is headed by a High Court in Hyderabad, which has jurisdiction for both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The High Court is subject to appeals authority of the Supreme Court of India in certain matters.

  • The state name Telangana is derived from Trilinga desa. Legends say, Lord Shiva descended in the lingam form from one of the three mountains of Trilinga desa. One of which is in Telangana.
  • Hyderabad is the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad, Telangana is famous for its unique shape that looks like a heart from an aerial view.
  • The famous tennis player, Sania Mirza who hails from Telangana is the brand ambassador of Telangana as well.
