Here we are with another blog on the series “KNOW OUR WORLD”. In this blog, we will talk about a country, globally famous for its stunning beaches, the friendly people, elephants, and for having the yoga-like Thai massage, i.e., Thailand.

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country. It’s known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. It is wholly within the tropics and encompasses diverse ecosystems.

Let’s discuss some important aspects of this country first.

  • Official Name: Kingdom of Thailand
  • Capital city: Bangkok
  • Religion: It is required by law that the King must be a Buddhist. Citizens are free to follow the religion of their choice. However, more than 90% of the population is Buddhist.
  • National Anthem: Phleng Chat Thai (Thai national anthem)
  • Royal Anthem: Sansoen Phra Barami (Glorify his prestige)

The red colour in the national flag stands for land and people, white for religion and blue for the monarchy. The three colours symbolize nation-religion-king which is the unofficial motto of the country. This design of the flag was adopted on 28th September 1917 by King Rama VI. This date is observed as a national day of importance for celebrating the flag.

  • Largest state (by area): Nakhon Ratchasima
  • Smallest state (by area): Samut Songkhram
  • Major mountain peaks: Doi Inthanon is the highest point in Thailand.

Polity:

  • King: Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as King Rama X (King since 2016)
  • Prime Minister: Prayut Chan-o-cha (since 2014)
  • Major political parties: A total of 77 parties contested the general elections of 2019. Major among them are Pheu Thai party, Palang Pracharath party, Bhumjaithai party, Democrat Party, and Move Forward party.
  • First Prime Minister: Phraya Manopakorn Nititada
