As part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and Wildlife Week celebrations, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Shri Bhupender Yadav, launched tiger rallies in 18 tiger range States across 51 reserves across the country on Gandhi Jayanti.

Theme of Tiger Rallies

The rally’s theme is “India for Tigers- A Rally on Wheels,” and it will take place at 51 reserves across the country.

Significance

The tiger rallies in India will bring people from all walks of life together, and the event’s large-scale coverage will enable it to reach a global audience. The rallies would also raise awareness about the importance of tiger conservation.

Key Highlights

  • The rallies will cover a distance of over 7,500 kilometres in seven days (2–8 October), traversing India’s diverse and beautiful regions.
  • Rallies were virtually kicked off in three tiger reserves— Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple (BRT) Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra and Sanjay Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh by waving a green flag.
  • With the theme “India for Tigers – A Rally on Wheels”, it will journey across 51 tiger reserves, 18 tiger range States where field directors, deputy directors and associated staff from respective tiger reserves will follow the assigned routes and unite at the designated focal point of celebration (the first nine tiger reserves designated during the inception of Project Tiger in 1973).
  • It will conduct outreach activities along the way and at the focal point of celebration.
  • The launch event was held at the Environment Ministry headquarters in the national capital and was attended by Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Choubey, Environment Secretary R. P. Gupta, and Additional Director Generals of Forest Soumitra Dasgupta and S.P. Yadav.

Portal on Wetland Launched

The Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also launched a web portal ‘Wetlands of India Portal’. It will serve as a single point of access to all the information relating to the wetlands.

A dashboard on the portal for each state and UT across the country has also been developed in order to access the portal and populate it with the information of wetlands in their administration. The wetland portal will also provide a monitoring mechanism at the national, state, and district levels.

Guidelines on sustainable eco-tourism

The Union Minister on the occasion also released the guidelines on sustainable eco-tourism in forest and wildlife areas, a field guide for monitoring the Indus river and Ganges dolphins, associated aquatic fauna and habitat, and Nagar Van guidelines.

Dolphin is an aquatic apex predator and controls the aquatic system. Dolphins act as an umbrella species, whose conservation will result in well being of associated habitat and biodiversity, including humans. Dolphin enumeration is very important to delineate important conservation areas, where development can be planned with appropriate mitigation measures, and to also secure livelihoods of local communities.
