In today’s blog we will talk about Eastern Economic Forum 2021. The Indian Prime Minister addressed the plenary session of the 6th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) via video conferencing. It was held from 2 – 4 September 2021 in Vladivostok, Russia.

About Eastern Economic Forum
The Eastern Economic Forum is an annual international conference held in Vladivostok, Russia, to promote foreign investment in Russia’s Far East. It was held for the first time in September 2015. The Far East Economic Forum is organised by a commission nominated by Roscongress, a Russian government agency.
It acts as a platform for addressing various global economic concerns, regional integration, and the development of new industrial and technology sectors, as well as global difficulties confronting Russia and other countries.
The Forum’s business programme includes a variety of business dialogues with leading Asia-Pacific partner countries, as well as with ASEAN, a vital integration organisation of Southeast Asia’s dynamically developing states.
Theme of this year is :The Opportunities for the Far East in a World under Transformation.
Key Highlights of PM’s Address
- He applauded President Putin’s vision for the development of the Russian Far East. he also reaffirmed India’s commitment as a part of its “Act East Policy” of being a reliable partner in this regard.
- Emphasized the importance of greater economic and commercial cooperation between the countries in line with ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’.
- Highlighted the relevance of health and pharmaceutical sectors as key areas of collaboration that emerged during the pandemic.
- Mentioned other areas of economic cooperation including diamond, coking coal, steel, timber etc.
- An invitation was given to Governors of the 11 regions of Russian Far East to visit India.
Importance of India-Russia cooperation
- One of the primary foundations of the India-Russia strategic cooperation is energy. Both countries’ energy partnerships have the potential to assist in stabilising the global energy market.
- Both the countries have also been making a Chennai-Vladivostok maritime corridor. This connectivity project and International North-South (Transport) Corridor will bring both the countries physically closer.
- India and Russia are striving to reduce the gap on Afghanistan and are pressing for the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism to be finalised at earliest.
- Aside from established areas of cooperation such as armaments, hydrocarbons, nuclear energy (Kudankulam), space (Gaganyaan), and diamonds, new economic sectors such as mining, agro-industrial, and high technology, such as robots, nanotechnology, and biotechnology, are anticipated to emerge.
Participants
President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh joined the session via videoconference.
President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi, and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha sent their video greetings to the forum.
Events
Events at the Forum traditionally took place in the form of panel sessions, roundtables, televised debates, business breakfasts, and business dialogues devoted to Russia’s relationships with various countries.
An Indian delegation led by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Shri Hardeep Singh Puri comprising leading Indian oil and gas companies are attending the India-Russia Business dialogue within the framework of EEF.
An online meeting between Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Vijay Rupani and Governor of Sakha-Yakutia province of Russia was held on 2 September on the sidelines of EEF. Over 50 representatives from reputed Indian companies from various sectors will also be participating in an online format.
