In today’s blog we will be talking about the ‘Geo-imaging Satellite – EOS-03’. It is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2021. We will let you know in detail about what this satellite is, its major functions and several other points. 

Geo-Imaging Satellite EOS-03

The Geo-Imaging Satellite EOS-03 (also known as GISAT -1) is developed by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for earth observation from Geostationary Orbit. The gathering of data about the Earth’s physical, chemical, and biological systems is known as Earth observation.

Objective of the Satellite

The satellite is capable of imaging the whole country 4-5 times daily. 

It will enable near real time monitoring of natural disasters like floods and cyclones.

It will also be capable of monitoring water bodies, crops, forest cover changes, vegetation conditions etc.

ISRO’s Earth Observation Satellites

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched IRS-1A, its first Earth Observation Satellite, in 1988.

On November 7, 2020, EOS-01 was launched. The EOS-01 is a RISAT-series Earth Imaging Satellite from India. The satellite supports agriculture, forestry, and disaster management.

OCEANSAT-2, RISAT-1 and 2, CARTOSAT-1, 2, 2A, 2B, RESOURCESAT-1, 2, 2A, SCATSAT-1, SARAL, Megha-Tropiques, INSAT-3D, INSAT -3DR, INSAT 3A, and Kalpana are the Earth Observation Satellites.

Other Developments – SSLV

  • The first developmental flight of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle, or SSLV, is planned for the fourth quarter of 2021 From Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
  • SSLV is a cost-effective, three stage, all-solid launch vehicle with a payload capability of 500 kg to 500 km planar orbit or 300 kg to Sun Synchronous Polar Orbit. 
  • SSLV is perfect for launching small satellites on demand and with a quick turnaround time.
  • Flexible nozzle control with electro-mechanical actuators for all stages, miniaturized avionics, and a velocity trimming module in the upper stage for precise satellite injection are among the primary technologies developed as part of the SSLV implementation.

Rescheduled launches

The launch of India’s 1st Human spaceflight programme ‘Gaganyaan’ has been postponed to 2022.

Chandrayaan-3 mission is likely to be launched in the 3rd quarter of 2022. It was earlier scheduled by the end of 2020 or start of 2021. To read more about Chandrayaan-3 read our blog.
