International Nurses Day- 12 May
This day marks the anniversary of Florence Nightingale and is celebrated to highlight the importance of nurses around the world, remember them for their immense hard work and contribution in the healthcare continuum. During times of need, they’re the first to assist a person and their care, concern and respectful treatment are undeniably vital. They are central to the delivery of health care and their sacrifices during the times of epidemic or pandemic are very well acknowledged and appreciated.

In January 1974, May 12 was chosen to celebrate ‘Nurses Day’.
Nurses Day History
Florence Nightingale initiated this practice of professional nursing. In the year 1860, the first secular nursing school came into existence at St Thomas’ hospital in London, she strived hard for it. To pay tribute to her and remember all that she did for the sick and needy, this day is celebrated. The highest international distinction, the Florence Nightingale Medal was named in her honour.

The theme for 2020 is Nurses: A Voice to Lead- Nursing the world to Health.
Objectives behind celebrating Nurses day
– Nurses around the world should be trained, provided guidance and up-to-date knowledge about the needs and requirements of the health sector so that they don’t lack behind.
– Good working conditions along with sick leaves, mental health support and other assistance should be provided to the nurses since they’re indispensable to the health sector.
– Adequate financial assistance and timely supply of resources required by them should be taken care of.
– All health workers should be treated with due respect.
World’s Nursing Report by the World Health Organisation(WHO)
It enlists the challenges we face and the amount invested for the global nursing workforce in the jobs and education sector. It also contains the list of government policies devised for the upliftment of workers.
Reason behind the International Nurses Day, 2020 being “extra special”
This year has been designated as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

-Virtual Webinars are organised to train and educate people.
-The International Council of Nurses distributes an international nurses day kit having educational and public information materials.
