In our earlier blog, we had talked about the culture, geography and political aspects of Tripura. If you haven’t read it already click here – Know your state ‘Tripura’ (Part 1). Now, we will be looking at other important aspects of the state i.e. history, environment and economy of Tripura.

What is the literacy rate of Tripura? What are the environmental aspects of Tripura?

Now firstly, let’s discuss the bygone days of Tripura.

HISTORY Tripura GK Notes:

Tripura has a very long history. The state has a history of over 2,500 years and 186 kings.

  • The ancient period was around the 7th century when the Tripuri kings ruled in North Tripura.
  • The Kings of Tripura gained the title of ‘manikya’ and shifted their capital to Rangamati that was on the banks of the River Gomti in South Tripura in the 14th century.
  • In this period, the Mughals saluted their power and polarity. The Mughals were their peers in North India.
  • The modern period began after the control of the kingdom by the Mughals and the further acclaimed by British India after the Britishers defeated the Mughals.
  • The British Indian government appointed a representative to assist the Maharaja in the administration in 1871.
  • During this period, Agartala was made the capital of the kingdom.
  • The rulers of Tripura built magnificent palaces namely Ujjayanta Palace and Neermahal Palace.
  • After India’s independence, the princely state of Tripura was merged with the Union of India on 15 October 1949.
  • Tripura became a Union Territory on 1 July 1963 and a full-fledged state on 21 January 1972.

Let’s talk about the environmental attributes of Tripura.

ENVIRONMENT Tripura GK Notes:

Tripura is one of the seven sister states of the North-eastern part of India. The name of the state was originally ‘Tupira’ which means land adjoining water. Tripura offers plenty of attractions in the form of magnificent palaces, splendid rocks, and important temples of the Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

  • The main 11 rivers of Tripura are: Bijay, Deo, Dhalai, Feni, Gumti, Haora, Juri, Khowai, Longai, Manu, Muhuri. All these rivers are originated from the hill ranges of Tripura.
  • The River Manu originating from Sakhan range of hills is the longest river of Tripura with a length of 167 km. It has several tributaries in the form of rivers and small streams.
  • Fenni and Langai are rivers that are shared by two Indian states, Tripura and Mizoram.
  • The longest bridge of Tripura is constructed on River Manu at Kanchanbari.
  • The Gumti dam which is built across the Gumti River near Dumbur in Tripura with a 30-meter height is a major dam of state.
  • Tripura presently has 332 check dams.
  • Major Lakes of Tripura are Dumboor Lake, Amarsagar, Rudrasagar, Kamalasagar, Khowra, Kalyansagar, Jagannath Dighi, Mahadev Dighi.
  • The State has a recorded forest area of 6,294 sq. km which is 60.02% of its geographical area.
  • Total number of National Parks is two in Tripura namely Clouded Leopard National Park, Rajbari National Park.
  • Total number of Wildlife Sanctuaries is four in Tripura namely Gumti Wildlife Sanctuary, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary, Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary, Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 20 km to the south of Agartala town. This sanctuary is divided into five sections and it is famous for its spectacled monkeys.

Now, let’s study the economy of Tripura.

ECONOMY Tripura GK Notes:

Agriculture forms a primary sector of the economy of Tripura. More than 75% of the state’s total population is dependent on agriculture. Rice is the major crop of the state that is cultivated in 91% of the cropped area. Pisciculture has made significant advances in the state. Tripura ranks second after Kerala in the production of natural rubber in the country. The industrial sector of Tripura continues to be highly underdeveloped. Brickfields and tea industry are the only two organised sectors available in the state. The economy of Tripura is characterised by the high rate of poverty, low capital formation, inadequate infrastructure facilities.

EDUCATION Tripura GK Notes:

According to 2011 census, Tripura is one of the most literate states in India with a literacy rate of 87.75%. Education in Tripura is compulsory and free for children between the ages of 6 and 14. The Umakanta Academy in Agartala is one of the oldest educational institutions in India’s north-eastern region built in 19th century. Higher educational facilities include Tripura University in Suryamaninagar and numerous general degree colleges, teachers colleges, and professional and technical institutions, including nursing and engineering schools.

SPORTS:

Tripura is a land full of traditional games and sports. Thwgmung is the traditional game of Tripura. Other traditional games of Tripura are Achugwi Phan, Sohlaimung, Bumanikotor, Dwkhwi Sotonmung, Phan Sohlaimung, Kaldong or Kadong, Longoi Chokmung, Muphuk Sagwnang, Musta Seklaio etc.

Here are some more interesting facts about TRIPURA:

  • According to the Rajmala, there was a king named Tripur in ancient times who ruled over the territorial domain known as Tripura and the kingdom’s name was derived from his name “Tripur”.
  • During the British Raj, Tripura was divided into two main regions, which were commonly called Tiperra District and Tiperra Hill.
  • Matabri temple is one of the famous 51 Shaktipeeth temples in the country and it is also known as Tripura Sundari Temple.
  • There is a museum in Tripura namely “The Ujjayanta Palace”. This palace has a rare collection of centuries-old handicrafts and relics that were used by northeast Indians.
