We’ll be discussing in detail about the day, its significance, theme and other related points.
Why 1st July?
This day is celebrated every year in India by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The date selected is 1st July to honour the eminent physician and second Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962 at the age of 80. He was honoured with Bharat Ratna on 4 February 1961.
Theme of 2021
IMA declared “Save the Saviours” as the theme of National Doctors’ Day 2021.
According to IMA, the country lost over 1500 doctors to the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes 736 doctors during the first wave and 798 from the first week of April till June 29. The actual figure can be more because IMA keeps record only of its 3.27 lakh members. Therefore, to dedicate the day to the doctors who lost their lives to COVID-19, the theme “Save the Saviours” was decided.
Significance of Doctors’ Day 2021
The day is dedicated to all the members of the medical fraternity who lost their lives serving their duty during the COVID-19 pandemic. It honours the dedication of the doctors and other healthcare professionals who are serving as the frontline workers in the pandemic.
