Hello People,
Hope you all are healthy and safe.
In this blog, we will talk about the discovery of new species of human by the archaeologists in Israel. We will discuss in detail about the species found, its history and other important facts.
Background
Israeli researchers on 24th June, 2021 announced that they have found bones which belong to a new type of early human. The archaeologists’ team is from Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Location of Excavation
Excavation was done at the Israeli site of Nesher Ramla.
What was Discovered ?
Archaeologists discovered pieces of skull including a right parietal at the back/side of the skull.
They also found an almost complete mandible (jaw) which dates back to 140,000 – 120,000 years old.
Along with the human remains, large quantities of animal bones and some 6000 stone tools were also found.
Key Facts Made By Researchers
- Analysis of researchers shows that the jaw belonged to people who were neither fully Homo sapiens nor were Neanderthal. However, Neanderthal was thought to be the only human type to live in the region at that time.
- The bone was found to be considerably thicker than that in Neanderthal and Homo sapiens.
- In the latest statement it was said that Nesher Ramla Humans have features of both Neanderthal and archaic homo.
- It was concluded that the Homo found is unlikely to the modern humans because a completely different skull structure, very large teeth and no chin are seen.
Why Nesher Ramla Homo Is Significant?
Hershkovitz of Tel Aviv University is one of the leaders of the team who analyzed the events. He said that this new type of homo is of great significance. Through this they will be able to sense previously found human fossils. Also they can add another piece to the puzzle of human evolution and understand the migration of humans in the old world.
Lady of Tabun
The “Lady of Tabun” (known to archaeologists as Tabun C1) was discovered in 1932. Archaeologist Yusra and her field director Dorothy Garrod discovered it. There are suggestions that the fossil found at the Israeli site and the Lady of Tabun might also be a part of this new human population.
Also there was fire!
Bones of animals caught, butchered and eaten on site were also found. These indicate that Nesher Ramla Homo hunted a variety of species such as boar, tortoise, gazelle, aurochs and ostrich. They were using fire to cook their meal which was evident through the discovery of a campfire featuring the same age as the fossils. The campfire feature impressively survived intact outside a protected cave environment for so long. It is now the oldest intact campfire found ever in the open air.
With this we come to the end of this blog. We covered all the possible related points to the new discovery. Hope you learnt some interesting details about the Nesher Ramla Homo.
