In today’s blog we will discuss the two cities of Madhya Pradesh which were selected by UNESCO under the Heritage Urban Landscape Project. We will let you know about the project, Indian cities included in the project, benefits of tourism for Madhya Pradesh and other facts.
Let us start by knowing about the project.
Heritage Urban Landscape Project (HUL)
The Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) is an approach for managing heritage resources in dynamic, ever-changing surroundings. It is based on recognizing and identifying the layering and connectivity of natural and cultural, tangible and intangible, international and local qualities that exist in any city.
It was launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the year 2011.
Inclusion of Orchha and Gwalior
- UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape for the cities of Orchha and Gwalior was launched by Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan through video conferencing.
- Indian cities of Varanasi and Ajmer are already involved in the project. Orchha and Gujarat became the 7th and 8th cities of South Asia.
- They will be jointly developed by UNESCO, Government of India and Madhya Pradesh. The focus will be on improving the historical and cultural heritage.
- The development and management plan will be prepared by UNESCO.
- History, culture, lifestyle, food, community development, economic development and all other aspects will be included in it.
Benefits to Madhya Pradesh
Inclusion of the cities of Madhya Pradesh in HUL project will provide the State a new dimension of tourism.
Additionally employment opportunities will also be created with the development of tourism.
The State CM also mentioned various schemes already launched to boost tourism. These include schemes like ‘Rural Tourism’, ‘Safe Tourism for Women’, ‘Wellness and Mindful Tourism’ etc.
About Orchha
Orchha means ‘hidden place’. It is popular for its temples and palaces. It was the capital of Bundela kingdom in the 16th century. Orchha architecture is a blend of Bundelkhand and Mughal influence. The structures are appreciated for their mesmerizing beauty and intelligent engineering.
The famous places in town include Jehangir Mahal, Rai Praveen Mahal, Raj Mahal Ramraja Temple and Laxminarayan Mandir.
About Gwalior
Gwalior was established in the 9th century. It occupies a sandstone plateau and consists of memorials, forts and palaces. Babur has described Gwalior as “the pearl in the necklace of forts of India and not even the winds could touch its masts”. The famous places include Jal Vilas Palace, Tigra Dam, Sun Temple, Memorial of Tansen and many more.
