What is UDISE+?
U-DISE or Unified District Information System for Education is a database about Indian schools. UDISE) was initiated in 2012-13 by the Ministry of education by integrating DISE (for elementary education) and SEMIS (for secondary education). UDISE+ is an improved and upgraded version of UDISE and is one of the largest information management systems on school education.
UDISE+ has acquired the status of the official statistics system of the Ministry of Education. The ‘+’ in UDISE+ means real time data i.e., the entire system is now online and has been collecting data since 2018-19.
Timely and accurate data is the basis of sound and effective planning and decision making. Hence the government used this system to get accurate and reliable data to form policies for public welfare.
UDISE+ has a mandate of collecting information from all recognized and unrecognized schools. It is now operational in all districts of the country.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF UDISE+?
The following are the ways in which UDISE+ helps policy makers and stakeholders and holds significance for the public:
- Its presents complex data in simple form.
- Evidence based decisions can be made by stakeholders by accessing and analysing data.
- School performance can be measured in real time.
- Cross sectional analysis of data to study the relationships among various factors impacting schools performance especially in enrolment.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT
On the 29th of June, 2021, Union minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank released the UDISE+ report for the year 2019-2020. The following are the key takeaways of the report:
- Gross Enrolment Ratio at all levels of school education has improved.
- Increased to 89.7% at upper primary level
- Increased to 97.8% at Elementary Level
- Increased to 77.9% at Secondary level
- Increased to 51.4% at higher secondarylevel
- 96.87 lakh teachers have been engaged in school education in 2019-20.
- The Pupil Teacher Ratio has improved at all levels of school education
- PTR for primary has become 26.5
- PTR for upper primary and secondary has become 18.5
- PTR for Highest secondary has become 26.1
- Enrolment of Divyang students has increased by 6.25%
- Gross Enrolment Ratio of Girls has increased
- At upper primary 90.5%
- At elementary level 98.7%
- At Secondary level 77.8%
- At Higher Secondary level 52.4%
- More than 80% Schools in India had functional electricity
- Number of Schools having functional computers increased to 5.2 Lakh
- Number of Schools having Internet facility increased to 3.36 lakh
- More than 90% schools in India had handwash facility in 2019-20.
