Who is a Refugee?

Refugee was defined as someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin. The reason being a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.

Origin of the World Refugee Day

It is an international observance and took place for the first time in the year 2001.

Refugee Day was first known as African Refugee Day.

This day marks the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Why do we celebrate World Refugee Day?

Millions of people have left their hometowns to escape conflict or persecution. To raise awareness about this issue, we observe Refugee Day. It aims at making people feel empathy towards those refugees and emphasizes creating an inclusive world for these people where they can freely exercise their rights and express their dreams and aspirations.

What is the theme for the year 2020?

“Every Action Counts” is this year’s theme. Every effort or initiative taken by an individual can help in controlling the ongoing Pandemic.

How can we contribute?

  • Raise awareness
  • Volunteer
  • Donate/ engage yourself in fundraising
  • Participate in webinars and online activities related to it.
  • Reach out to a refugee and help him out.
