Theme for 2020
The theme for the event this year is “Environmental protection for improving animal and human health.” The date is 27th April 2020.
Motive behind celebrating World Veterinary Day
The basic motive behind this day is to encourage the veterinarians, their sacrifices, and achievements. Moreover, importance is given to animal and human welfare, issues related to the environment, food, water, and animal protection. The actions of Veterinarians can help mitigate the effects of climate change, ensure proper disposal of medicines, and support responsible use of natural resources necessary in raising livestock.”
Human health, animal health, and the environment are interlinked. Thus any harm to one of these will ultimately break the link and have harmful effects.
Ways of Celebration
Different types of seminars and conferences are held each year. Animal, human, and environmental health issues are discussed. Also, ways of improvement are suggested.
The WVA Congress also awards a vet every year and applauds his/her work related to the theme for the following year in order to encourage the people around.
Year of Initiation
It was first celebrated in the year 2001 as an annual celebration of the veterinary profession. The very first theme was “Rabies”. This theme was chosen to shake out awareness about protecting and maintaining proper hygiene for their dogs and preventing the spread of this disease.
How to create a healthy environment for all:
– Food-producing animals should be given special care. They should be raised in humane conditions to avoid the spread of infections.
– Animals should be examined before slaughtering so that human life is not harmed.
– Proper practices like vaccination, regular check-ups and deworming must be ensured.
– Drug usage should be minimized so that it does not intensely hamper both human and animal life.
Most importantly, Veterinarians have the power to control the pandemics by protecting the animal life, by providing them proper food, shelter, treatment and accommodating them in hygienic places. It’s a responsibility of every person working both in animal and human sectors to ensure good working conditions and preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases like COVID-19, Avian influenza, the Ebola virus disease and swine flu which hampers human life, results in proliferation of diseases and eventually resulting in loss of both human and animal life.
