World Youth Skills Day: History
The UN General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day in 2014. The aim behind this day is to to recognize the strategic importance of providing young people with skills for employment, dignified labor, and entrepreneurship.
World Youth Skills Day 2021: Theme
The 2021 Youth Skill day takes place in a challenging context amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The theme this year is “Reimagining Youth Skills Post-Pandemic” which will pay tribute to the strength and creativity of the youth.
This event brings young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, enterprises, employers’ and workers’ organisations, policymakers, and development partners together.
World Youth Skills Day 2021
- The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development places a strong emphasis on youth skills and employment. SDG target 4.4 calls for a significant rise in the number of youth and adults with relevant skills.
- It is co-organized by the Permanent Missions of Portugal and Sri Lanka to the United Nations, together with Unesco, ILO and the Office of the Secretary-General Envoy on Youth.
- Additionally, the Global framework on core skills for life and work in the 21st century will be launched. This new global framework reflects the continuing transformations and rising opportunities in the world of work. It contributes to the ILO’s efforts to promote lifelong learning as a means of personal and professional development for all.
State of Youth Employment, schools and TVET
The TVET survey was jointly done by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization and World Bank revealed that distance learning was the most common way of imparting skills.
According to the estimates of UNESCO, schools were shut down for over 30 weeks in 50 percent of the countries between March 2020 and May 2021.
Youth employment fell 8.7 percent last year as compared to 3.7 percent for adults.
Initiatives taken by India
The Government has set up the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to facilitate job creation and entrepreneurship as well as to attract private investment. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna (Skill India Mission) is MSDE’s scheme. It aims to assist young Indians to take up industry-relevant skills training and improve their employability.
On the 6th anniversary of Skill India Mission and World Youth Skill day Prime MInister Narendra Modi Addressed the youth of the nation. He highlighted the importance of upskilling and reskilling in making India Atma Nirbhar.
More than 12.5 million young people have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojna.
