I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 12th of June, 162th day of the year and 24th Saturday of 2021.
1) Today in 1964 Nelson Mandela was sentenced to Life Imprisonment.
Human right activist and South African anti apartheid leader was sentenced to life imprisonment for his political activism by South African establishment. He became the first black president of South Africa. India awarded him Bharat Ratna in 1990.
2) Today in 1952 the Jammu and Kashmir assembly decided to terminate the Hereditary monarchy.
J&K constituent assembly accepted the recommendation of its Basic Principles Committee headed by Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg. It was agreed that the head of the state shall be a person recognized by the President on recommendation of the legislature of state.
3) Today in 1990 Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1D) launched.
It is a communication and meteorology satellite and was launched by US Delta launch vehicle Kennedy Space Station in Florida, US.
4) Today in 1991 Russia’s First President Boris Yeltsin was elected.
He was easily elected as president of Russia in the Republic’s first direct popular elections. He was President of independent Russia until eve of 2000.
5) Today in 1994 Worlds largest Twin Jet, Boeing 777 took off its first flight.
It is commonly referred to as Triple Seven. It was designed to bridge the gap between Boeings’s 767 and 747 and to replace older DC-10s and L-1011s.
