I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 17th of June, 167th day of the year and 24th Thursday of 2021.
1) Today in 1839 First Governor General of India William Bentinck died.
He is most remembered for his abolition of Sati in British India. It was during his term as Governor of Madras that the Vellore Mutiny took place. The Charter Act of 1833 was passed during his tenure.
2) Today in 1917 Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi started living at Hriday Kunj in Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad.
Kakasaheb Kelelkar named it Hriday Kunj. It served as his residence for the next approximately 13 years till 1930. In 1930 he left the ashram with a vow “Not to return to this Ashram till India became Independent”.
3) Today in 1991 India’s Highest award Bharat Ratna was given to Rajiv Gandhi (Posthumous).
Rajiv Gandhi served as the 6th Prime Minister of India.He took the office after the 1984 assassination of his mother , PM Indira Gandhi..He became the youngest PM at the of 40.
4) Today in 1887 Dr Kailash Nath Katju, freedom fighter, politician, leader and Governor of Orissa and West Bengal was born.
He was a prominent politician of India. He was part of some most notable cases of his times including Indian National Army Trials. Katju defended the accused in the Meerut Conspiracy case in Allahabad High Court in 1933.
5) Today in 1940 Iceland declared itself a republic.
When German Forces occupied Denmark in 1940, Iceland assumed control over its own foreign affairs and gradually moved toward complete independence from Denmark.
