1) Today in 1757 Battle of Plassey was fought.

It was fought between Nawab of Bengal, Siraj ud Daulah and British East India Company. British as a result of the War became the Paramount power in Bengal. In Nawabs court many people were discontent and were hatching conspiracies to overthrow Nawab like Mir Jafar, Yar Lutuf KHan, Omichand etc.

2) Today in 1761 Third Peshwa of the Marathas Balaji Bajirao died.

He was also known as Nana Saheb and was 8th Peshwa of the Maratha Empire in India. The defeat in the third battle of Panipat was a huge setback for Marathas and Peshwa.

3) Today in 1953 politician Shyama Prasad Mukherjee died.

He was the founder of the Jana Sangh. He served as Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Nehru’s cabinet. While protesting against the Nehru-Liaquat pact, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru’s cabinet.

It led to the death of 329 people. The explosion was carried out by an Extremist group.

5) Today in 1810 Duncan Dock of Bombay was completed.

1810 Duncan Dock of Bombay was completed

It was named after Jonathan Duncan, the governor of Bombay and consists of 2 docks, Upper and Lower Dock. HMS Minden, an Indian Teakwood vessel, was the first ship to be launched from Duncan dock.
