I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 29th of June, 179th day of the year and 26th Tuesday of 2021.
1) Today in 2014 Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) declared itself a worldwide caliphate.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named as the caliph on 29 June 2014. The group claims political, military and religious authority over Muslims all over the world. It is a terrorist organisation and follows a fundamentalist Wahhabi or Salafi doctrine of Sunni Islam.
2) Today in 1893 Indian Scientist Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis was born in Kolkata, West Bengal.
His birth anniversary is observed as “National Statistics day” in India. He is best known for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure.
3) Today in 1997 Vishwanathan Anand won the Frankfurt Chess Classic 97 Title in Germany.
Anand has won the World Chess Championship five times and has been a World Champion since 2007. Anand went on to win the Frankfurt Chess Classic 97 in Germany ahead of Kasparov and Karpov.
4) Today in 1998 the Government of India decided to grant full statehood for Delhi and create three new states namely Uttranchal, Vananchal and Chattisgarh.
Vananchal also known as Jharkhand was the Bread Earner state. Chattisgarh was among the most backward regions in the country.
5) Today in 1999 An Indian High Commissioner Member NR Doraiswamy was beaten up by Pakistani Intelligence Operatives.
Staff member of Indian High Commission in Islamabad was abducted in front of his house by 10 Pakistani Intelligence Operatives and released after being badly beaten up. The abduction was preplanned in complete violation of the Vienna Convention.
