1) Today in 1781 Battle of Porto Novo was fought.
It was fought between Hyder Ali of Mysore and British EIC. In porto Novo Coote commanded a force of a little more than 8000 men while Ali had 40,000 men under his command. Ali was defeated in the war.
2) Today in 1882 Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was born.
He was the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. His birth anniversary is observed in India as “National Doctors Day”. He died on the same date in 1962.
3) Today in 1822 Daily Newspaper “Mumbai Samachar” was published.
It is the oldest continuously published newspaper in India. It is published in Gujarati and English. It was published by Fardunjee Marzban.
4) Today in 1852 India became the first country in Asia to issue its own postage stamps.
India’s first stamps came into circulation in a remote historic region called Sindh, a province of Pakistan.
5) Today in 1862 Calcutta High Court was established for West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
This court has a circuit Bench at Port Blair. It is located at BBD Bagh, Kolkata, West Bengal.
