1) Today in 1986 Babu Jagjivan Ram passed away.
He was a Dalit rights champion and union minister after independence. His birth anniversary is observed as “Samata Diwas” or “Equality Day” in India.
2) Today in 1901 Veteran Politician Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee was born.
He was a Indian Politician, barrister and academician who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in PM Nehru’s cabinet. With the help of RSS he founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to Bharatiya Janata Party.
3) Today in 1787 Robert founded Indian Botanic Garden near Calcutta.
Indian Botanic Garden is today known as The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden or Calcutta Botanic Garden. Garden exhibits a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000 specimens spread over 109 hectares.
4) Today in 1917 Bhandarkar Prachyavidya Sanshodhan Mandir was established.
It is also known as Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute located in Pune It was named after Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar. Institute is well known for old Sanskrit and Prakrit Manuscripts.
