I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 8th of July, 188th day of the year and 27th Thursday of 2021.
1) Today in 1918 Montagu-Chelmsford Reforms were published.
It formed the basis of the Government of India Act 1919. The declaration proposed the increased participation of Indians in the administration and development of self governing institutions in India.
2) Today in 1907 Elphinstone Picture Palace was started by Jamshedji F Madan at Calcutta.
It is also known as Chaplin Cinema. In this theatre the father of Uttam Kumar used to run the projector. It was the oldest single screen movie theatre in Kolkata, West Bengal.
3) Today in 1914 Jyoti Basu, former CM of West Bengal was born.
He was the longest serving CM of democratically elected govt till June 2019 with a tenure of 23 years and 137 days. He was a die hard communist and founder of Communist Party of India (Marxist).
4) Today in 1930 The King Inaugurated India House in Aldwych, London.
It was proposed in 1925 by the Indian High Commissioner Sir Atul Chatterjee. The building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1930.
5) Today in 1972 former Indian Cricket Team Captain Sourav Ganguly was born in Calcutta.
He is affectionately known as Dada. He is popularly honoured as Maharaja of Indian Cricket. He led India in the 2003 World Cup final but was defeated by the mighty Australians. He is the current president of BCCI.
