1) Today in 1827 Freedom fighter Mangal Pandey was born.
He was a sepoy of British East India Company and played a major role in the incidents leading up to First War of Independence in 1857. He was born in an upper caste Hindu family.
2) Today in 1763 Mir Qasim was defeated in the Battle of Katwa by Britishers.
The third battle of Katwa occured between Nawab of Bengal, Mir Qasim and British East India Company. The Nawabi garrison at Katwa surrendered after putting up a feeble resistance.
3) Today in 1949 Raja of Tehri Garhwal announced merger with Indian Union.
Meaning of Garhwal is country of forts It was a princely state ruled by Garhwali Rajput Dynasty in north western Uttarakhand of India.
4) Today in 1969 Indian Govt nationalised 14 major commercial banks of India by presidential Ordinance.
Government of India issued Banking (Acquisition and Transfer of Undertakings) Ordinance, 1969 and nationalized 14 largest commercial banks. These banks contained 85% of Bank deposits in the country.
5) Today in 1974 Revolutionary Udham Singh’s ashes were brought to Delhi from London.
He was a freedom fighter who belonged to Gadar party. He killed Michael o Dwyer, former Lieutenant governor of Punjab. The assassination was a revenge for Jallianwala bagh massacre in Amritsar.
