1) Today in 1903 Indian National Congress Leader and freedom fighter K Kamraj was born.
He was the 3rd chief Minister of the Madras State.He took part in the Non Cooperation Movement, Nagpur Flag Satyagraha .He was elected President of INC in 1963.
2) Today in 1948 PEPSU (Patiala and East Punjab States Union) was established.
PEPSU was a state of India uniting 8 princely states between 1948 and 1956.The capital and principal city was Patiala. Shimla, Kasauli, Kandaghat and Chail also became part of PEPSU.
3) Today in 1955 India’s Highest Award Bharat Ratna was announced to be given to Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.
The award was to be given by president of India Dr Rajendra Prasad. Nehru was the first and longest serving Prime Minister of India.
4) Today in 1997 Mahesh Chander Mehta, Environmental Activist won the Ramon Magsaysay award.
He is a public interest attorney from India. He was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize in 1996 for his continuous fights in Indian Courts against pollution causing industries.
