1) Today in 1835 Freedom Fighter Tirot Sing died.
He was the chief of Khasi people of North- Eastern India and died while he was in British Captivity. The state of Meghalaya observes the day as U Tirot Sing Day every year.
2) Today in 1996 Madras City changed its name to Chennai.
The name Chennai is of Telugu Origin. It was derived from Telugu ruler Damaria Mudirasa Chennappa Nayakudu. The government of Tamil Nadu in 1996 officially changed the name from Madras to Chennai.
3) Today in 1947 Ramdas Coastal Steamer Sank off Mumbai Claiming 724 lives.
The Indian Passenger Ship SS Ramdas while bound for Rewas in Maharashtra capsized near Gull Island, ten miles from Colaba Point.
4) Today in 1936 Spanish Civil War began.
A well planned uprising by Nationalist rebels against the Republican govt of Spain began that day, sparking a bloody civil war that lasted until 1939, when the Nationalist and Francisco Franco assumed power.
