I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 29th of July, 209th day of the year and 28th Thursday of 2021.
1) Today in 1987 Indo-SriLanka Peace Accord was signed.
It was signed in Colombo between the Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President JR Jayewardene in an effort to bring the Sri Lankan Civil war to end. The accord saw the induction of Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) in Sri Lanka.
2) Today in 1904 Eminent Entrepreneur and aviator JRD Tata was born.
He was born as Jehangir into a Parsi family. He was the second child of businessmen Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his french wife Suzanne. His mother was the first woman in India to drive a car and he became the first licensed pilot in India.
3) Today in 1876 Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) was established.
It is the oldest institute in India devoted to the pursuit of fundamental research in the frontier areas of basic sciences. Professor CV Raman worked at IACS during 1907 to 1933.
4) Today in 1911 Mohun Bagan became the first Indian Football Team to win the IFA Shield.
The IFA Shield is an annual football competition organized by Indian Football Association. It is the governing body of football in the state of West Bengal. Mohun Bagan defeated East Yorkshire Regiment by 2-1 to win the title.
5) Today in 1891 Bengali Sanskrit Pundit and Social Worker Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar passed away.
The focus of his social reform was women and he spent his life’s energies trying to ensure an end to the practice of child marriage and initiate widow remarriage.
