I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 31st of July, 211th day of the year and 29th Saturday of 2021.
1) Today in 1940 Revolutionary and Ghadarite Freedom fighter Udham Singh was hanged.
He was hanged for the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer who had been Lieutenant Governor of Punjab when Jallianwalabagh Massacre took place. States of Punjab and Haryana observed 31st july as Martyrs day.
2) Today in 1658 Aurangzeb was proclaimed the Mughal Emperor of India.
He ruled over 1/4th of the population for 49 years. He imposed Jizya and destroyed Hindu temples. He is held responsible for the beginning of the end of Mughals.
3) Today in 1880 Munshi Premchand was born.
He was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindustani literature. His novels include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, idgah.
4) Today in 1948 Calcutta State Transport Corporation was established.
CSTC was a West Bengal state govt undertaking Transport corporation. It is headquartered at Kolkata. Currently it operates under the name WBTC.
