I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 2nd of August, 213th day of the year and 29th Monday of 2021.
1) Today in 1858 India became a British Colony.
Indian Administration passed from East India Company to the British Government. The East India Company had been ruling parts of India prior to 1858. British Monarch Queen Victoria was proclaimed “Empress of India” in 1876.
2) Today in 1876 Designer of Indian National Flag Pingali Venkayya was born.
He was an Indian Freedom Fighter and a staunch follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He presented the draft design of the flag to Mahatma Gandhi at the AICC session held at Bezwada (Vijayawada).
3) Today in 1970 India’s first Woman diplomat CB Muthamma was appointed as Ambassador to Hungary.
She was the first woman to clear Indian Civil Services examinations and first woman to join Indian Foreign Service. She is remembered for her successful crusade for gender equality in Indian Civil Services.
4) Today in 1999 The Gaisal Train disaster happened in Assam killing 290 people.
The disaster occurred when two trains the Avadh Assam Express and Brahmaputra Mail carrying 2500 people collided at a remote station of Gaisal, West Bengal.
