1) Today in 1884 Nationalist revolutionary Leader Lala Hardayal was born.
Lala Har Dayal Singh Mathur was an Indian nationalist revolutionary and freedom fighter. He was a polymath who turned down a career in the Indian Civil Service.
2) Today in 1998 Amartya Sen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics.
Sen received the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his theoretical, field, and ethics work in welfare economics and for his research advancing the understanding of social-choice theory, poverty, and the measurement of welfare.
3) Today in 1956 Bhim Rao Ambedkar along with lakhs of followers embraced Buddhism in Nagpur.
Along with Ambedkar, lakhs of his followers also converted to Buddhism. The choice of the city, Nagpur, was, however, questioned as it was also home to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Ambedkar himself clarified this saying the choice of the city had nothing to do with it being the headquarter of the RSS– the largest Hindu organization operating in the country.
