I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of the 3rd of August, 214th day of the year and 29th Tuesday of 2021.
1) Today in 1954 The Department of Atomic Energy was established.
The department is engaged in development of nuclear power technology in India. The atomic energy Bill was passed by Parliament in 1948. Atomic energy commission was set up with the first chairman being Homi Bhabha.
2) Today in 1780 British captured the Gwalior Fort.
British, led by Captain Popham and Bruce, captured the Gwalior Fort from Maratha General Mahadaji Shinde. A stamp was issued on August 3 1984 by India Post in honour of the Fort.
3) Today in 1985 Baba Amte received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service.
Murlidhar Devidas Amte was an Indian Social Worker and social activist known particularly for his work for rehabilitation and empowerment of people suffering from Leprosy.
4) Today in 1998 India test fired “AKASH”, the medium range surface to air missile at Chandipur.
AKASH was developed by DRDO, Ordnance Factories Board and Bharat Electronics.
5) Today in 1994 First successful heart transplant operation was performed at AIIMS, Delhi.
It was done by a team of doctors led by Prof P Venugopal. In a 59 minute procedure, a team of 20 surgeons conducted the successful surgery for Devi Ram, a worker suffering from Cardiomyopathy.
