I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of the 17th of September, 259th day of the year and 36th Friday of 2021.
1) Today in 1948 Nizam of Hyderabad surrendered to the Indian Union.
Nizam of Hyderabad Asaf Jah VII announced a ceasefire of all military operations against the Indian Army which had entered with intention of annexing it to the Indian Union. Hyderabad was the first kingdom to enter into a subsidiary alliance with the British government in 1798. The Indian Army named the operation as Operation Polo.
2) Today in 1879 EV Ramasamy Periyar, founder of Dravidar Kazhagam, was born.
He was a social activist and a politician. He started the Self Respect Movement. He is known as father of Dravidian Movement. He rebelled against Brahminical dominance and gender and caste inequality in Tamil Nadu.
3) Today in 1965 the Battle of Chawinda was fought between India and Pakistan.
It was a major engagement between India and Pakistan in the second Kashmir War as part of the Sialkot Campaign. It is known as the largest tank battle in history since the Battle of Kursk. Battle came to an end shortly before the UNSC mandated an immediate ceasefire.
