I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 18th of September, 260th day of the year and 36th Saturday of 2021.
1) Today in 1615 First English Ambassador to Mughal Court Sir Thomas Roe arrived in Surat.
Roe arrived at the port of Surat with a letter from King James I to the then reigning Mughal Emperor, Jahangir, seeking a trade agreement. The ambassador would go on to spend four years of negotiations at the Mughal court, eventually returning to England in 1619 without the trade agreement he sought.
2) Today in 1967 English was adopted as the Official Language of Nagaland.
In 1967, the Nagaland Assembly proclaimed Indian English as the official language of Nagaland and it is the medium for education in Nagaland. Other than English, Nagamese, a creole language based on Assamese, is widely spoken.
3) Today in 1803 Puri was captured by the British from the Marathas without any resistance.
When the British troops entered Puri, they found no resistance. The Marathas had fled, the local population cowered in their homes. The Company troops set up camp two miles away from the temple.
