I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 19th of August, 230th day of the year and 31st Thursday of 2021.
1) Today in 1757 First Rupee Coin was minted by the East India Company in Kolkata.
EIC minted the first rupee coin in Calcutta Mint which it had established under a treaty with Nawab of Bengal. Calcutta Mint closed operations in 1952 when a new mint was established at Alipore.
2) Today in 1916 Former Indian President Dr Shankar Daya Sharma was born.
He was the ninth President of India serving from 1992 to 1997. Prior he was eighth Vice President of India serving under R. Venkatraman. The International Bar Association presented Sharma with the Living Legends of Law Award”.
3) Today in 1919 Afghanistan gained independence from Britain according to The Rawalpindi Treaty.
August 19 commemorates the signing of Treaty of Rawalpindi in 1919 which gave Afghanistan complete independence from British rule after three wars. The British thought controlled Afghanistan’s foreign policy for 40 years after the second Anglo-Afghan war, but Afghanistan was never part of the British Empire.
