1) Today in 1960 India and Pakistan signed the Indus Water Treaty.
The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan, brokered by the World Bank, to use the water available in the Indus River and its tributaries. It was signed in Karachi by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan.
2) Today in 2000 Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Malleswari lifted 110 kg in the “snatch” and 130 kg in the “clean and jerk” categories for a total of 240 kg. She won the bronze medal and became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.
3) Today in 1933 Sunith Francis Rodrigues, former Chief Army General, was born.
General Sunith Francis Rodrigues, PVSM, VSM is a retired Indian army officer. He was Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army from 1990 to 1993 and Governor of Punjab from 2004 to 2010.
