1) Today in 1928 Great Social Reformer Sree Narayana Guru died.
Narayana Guru was a philosopher, spiritual leader and social reformer in India. He led a reform movement against the injustice in the caste-ridden society of Kerala in order to promote spiritual enlightenment and social equality.
2) Today in 1878 “The Hindu” was published for the first time as a weekly in Madras.
The Hindu is an English-language daily newspaper owned by The Hindu Group, headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Indian newspapers of record and the second most circulated English-language newspaper in India, after “The Times of India”.
3) Today in 1933 Annie Besant, an Irish Theosophist who championed the cause of Home Rule For India, died.
Annie Besant was a British socialist, theosophist, women’s rights activist, writer, orator, educationist, and philanthropist. Regarded as a champion of human freedom, she was an ardent supporter of both Irish and Indian self-rule. She was a prolific author with over three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit.
