1) Today in 1725 Robert Clive, popularly known as “Clive of India”, was born.
Major-General Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive KB, FRS, was the first British Governor of the Bengal Presidency. He is credited along with Warren Hastings for laying the foundation of British rule in India.
2) Today in 1836 the Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in Madras.
The main function of a Chamber of Commerce is to promote interest in local business possibilities. It provides educational opportunities and assists businesses with the latest marketing and promotional techniques. The Chamber works for the ever-increasing population, assuring additional customers and income.
3) Today in 1959 Arati Saha became the first Asian Woman to swim across the English Channel.
Arati Gupta was an Indian Bengali long-distance swimmer. In 1960, she became the first Indian sportswoman to be awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour in India.
