1) Today in 1993 Devastating Latur Earthquake measured 6.4 on Richter scale struck Maharashtra.

Latur earthquake was one of the deadliest earthquakes Maharashtra has seen till date. The earthquake struck at about 3.56 am on September 30, 1993. In the intraplate earthquake about 52 villages were destroyed, over 30,000 were injured and approximately 10,000 were killed.

2) Today in 1943 Father of Indian Journalism Ramananda Chatterjee died.

Ramananda Chatterjee was founder, editor, and owner of the Calcutta based magazine, the Modern Review. In 1907, Chatterjee launched that English magazine and went on to found two others, the third being the Hindi-language Vishal Bharat.

3) Today in 1996 Madras City was renamed to Chennai.

Chennai was previously called Madras. Madras was the shortened name of the fishing village Madraspatnam, where the British East India Company built a fort and factory (trading post) in 1639–40. Tamil Nadu officially changed the name of the city to Chennai in 1996. Chennai is now the capital of Tamil Nadu.
