I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 31st of August, 242nd day of the year and 33rd Tuesday of 2021.
1) Today in 1751 English East India Company’s forces led by Robert Clive captured Arcot.
Arcot was the capital of the Nawab of Carnatic (Arcot), Chanda Sahib. The siege was part of the Second Carnatic war. After the siege where a numerically inferior force defeated a much larger force, the British forces were seen with awe and they dominated the French Colonial power.
2) Today in 1956 States Reorganisation Act received Presidential Assent.
It was a major reform of the boundaries of India’s states and territories organising them along linguistic lines. The act came into effect at the same time as the Constitution (Seventh) Amendment act.The act came into effect from 1st November 1956.
3) Today in 1967 Ramon Magsaysay Award was given to Satyajit Ray.
He was an Indian Film director, scriptwriter, author, music composer etc. He is widely recognised as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time in the world of cinema. The Government of India honoured him with Bharat Ratna in 1992.
