I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 4th of August, 215th day of the year and 29th Wednesday of 2021.
1) Today in 1845 Lion of Bombay Pherozeshah Mehta was born.
He was one of the founding members of Indian National Congress. He stressed on the need to bring reforms in the Bombay Municipal Government. He is considered Father of Bombay Municipality. He was President of the Congress session at Calcutta in 1890.
2) Today in 1935 The Government of India Act 1935 got royal assent.
It was the longest act enacted by British Parliament. The act introduced direct elections in India for the first time. The Indian Council was abolished. The act got repealed on 26th January 1950 in India.
3) Today in 1956 India’s First Nuclear Research reactor APSARA was commissioned.
It was commissioned by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). It was the first Nuclear Reactor in India as well as Asia. The reactor was built with assistance from the UK who provided initial fuel. It is local at BARC, Mumbai. It was permanently shut down in 2009.
4) Today in 1967 World’s longest and highest Dam “Nagarjuna Sagar” made by the Masonry System was inaugurated.
It is located across Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar. Dam provides irrigation water to Nalgonda, Suryapet, Krishna, Khammam, West Godavari, Guntur and Prakash districts along with electricity generation.
