1) Today in 2012 the Father of White Revolution in India Dr Verghese Kurien passed away.
Due to his efforts and initiatives India was transformed from a milk deficient country to a self sufficient milk producing country. He met his mentor Tribhuvandas Patel and together established Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd. This was later renamed as Amul.
2) Today in 1828 Russian Novelist Leo Tolstoy was born.
He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906. He is best known for the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction.
3) Today in 1812 First paper currency was issued by the Bank of Bengal.
The notes of this bank were later printed by Perkins, Heath & Co in England. They can be distinguished into at least 10 different types. They were issued in a wide range of denominations from Rs 10 to Rs 1000.
