I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 23rd of August, 234th day of the year and 32nd Monday of 2021.
1) Today in 2004 Lok Sabha Passed National Rural Guarantee Act (NREGA).
It guarantees a minimum of 100 days of paid work for rural households. NREGA is touted as the largest social security scheme in the world. The Act ensures the right to employment to rural households.
2)Today in 1994 Padma Shri Awardee and first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel Arati Saha died in Kolkata.
She was an Indian-Bengali long distance swimmer. She became the first Indian Sportswomen to be awarded Padma Shri.
3) Today in 1958 Marathwada University was established.
It is one of the oldest Premier Universities established by the Government of Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune University. It is named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.
