I welcome you all to “Today in History by Hranker.com”. Here, we will discuss some of the major events in the history of 27th of August, 238th day of the year and 33rd Friday of 2021.
1) Today in 1781 Battle of Pollilur took place.
Hyder Ali of Mysore clashed with British East India Company’s forces at the Battle of Pollilur. The English were victorious in the battle. It was part of the Second Anglo Mysore war between English Forces and the Kingdom of Mysore. The second Anglo-Mysore war ended inconclusively with the treaty of Mangalore. As per Treaty of Mangalore both parties agreed to return captured properties.
2) Today in 1979 Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army.
He was assassinated by a bomb planted aboard his fishing boat in Mullaghmore, Ireland. He was a member of the British Royal Family, Royal Navy Officer and statesman.
3) Today in 1987 B Shankaranand Appointed Chairman of Joint Parliamentary Committee to enquire into Bofors gun Deal.
It was the first JPC formed to investigate the Bofors scandal. It was formed on a motion moved by the then defence Ministers KC Pant in the Lok Sabha.
