1) Today in 1837 Bahadur Shah Zafar ascended the throne of Delhi and became emperor.

He was a titular Emperor, as the Mughal Empire existed in name only and his authority was limited only to the walled city of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad). Following his involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British exiled him to Rangoon in British-controlled Burma (now in Myanmar), after convicting him on several charges.

2) Today in 1929 Legendary Bollywood singer Lata Mangeshkar was born.

She is one of the best known and most respected playback singers in India. She has recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Marathi, Urdu, Hindi and Bengali. She was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour and is only the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honour.

3) Today in 1982 former Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra was born.

Lieutenant Colonel Abhinav Apjit Bindra is an Indian Olympic Gold Medallist, retired shooter and businessman. He is the first and one of only 2 Indians to win an Individual Olympic Gold Medal. He won the gold medal in the men’s 10M air rifle at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.
