1. The Central Consumer Protection Authority has issued notices to Ola and Uber on violation of consumer rights and unfair trade practices.
A) The main point of the notice is Deficiency in service which includes lack of proper response from customer support, driver refusing to take payment by online mode and insisting for cash only, higher amount charged despite going on the same route previously at a lesser charge, unprofessional driver behaviour and driver refusing to switch on AC when the consumer is promised AC ride on the app.
B) Inadequate consumer grievance redressal mechanism in absence of both customer care number and details of grievance officer as required to be mentioned on the platform.
2. On 20th May ‘World Bee Day’ is celebrated annually.
A) Beekeeping is a widespread and global activity, with millions of beekeepers depending on bees for their livelihoods and well-being.
B) This year FAO celebrated World Bee Day under the theme ‘Bee Engaged: Celebrating the diversity of bees and beekeeping systems’.
C) The centrally funded scheme, ‘National Beekeeping and Honey Mission’ aims to establish 5 big regional and 100 small honey and other Bee Products testing laboratories.
3. The Union Government lifted “Export Prohibition” on Bamboo Charcoal for Higher Profitability of Bamboo Industry.
A) Government has lifted the “export prohibition” on bamboo charcoal, a move that would facilitate optimum utilization of raw bamboo and higher profitability in the Indian bamboo industry.
B) Bamboo charcoal for barbeque, soil nutrition and as a raw material for manufacturing activated charcoal, has great potential in international markets like the USA, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Germany, Italy, France and the UK.
4. India has reported the highest foreign direct investment (FDI inflow) $83 billion in 2021-2022.
A) According to the government, the FDI inflow in the manufacturing sectors increased by 76 per cent in the previous financial year ($21.34 billion) as compared to the $12.09 billion in the financial year 2020-21.
B) Among the top contributors to India’s FDI inflow, Singapore topped the charts with a share of 27 per cent, followed by the US (18 per cent) and Mauritius accounting for 16 per cent.
5. Canada to ban China’s Huawei, ZTE from 5G networks over national security concerns.
A) Relations between Canada and China have deteriorated in recent times, since senior Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was detained in Vancouver in 2018 on charges of allegedly defrauding a financial institution to bypass sanctions upon the Iranian regime.
B) Among the Five Eyes group of nations – US, UK, Australia and New Zealand – Canada was the only one yet to announce a ban or restrictions on Huawei.
6. India slams Pak FM Bilawal for ‘unwarranted remarks’ at UNSC on Kashmir issue.
A) India’s response came after Bilawal raked up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, the abrogation of Article 370 and the recent order by the Delimitation Commission during his remarks at the Council debate.
B) India exercised the Right of Reply at the Security Council open debate on ‘Maintenance of International Peace & Security – Conflict and Food Security’ organised by the US, the Council President.
7. Netflix launched ‘Kids Mystery Box’ to help parents discover new content for children.
A) Netflix has come up with a new feature at helping parents introduce new content to their children: the Netflix Kids Mystery Box.
B) The new feature will allow parents to click on a button to be presented with a new child-friendly movie or show that hasn’t yet been watched by their child.
8. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner have decided to forego income tax allowances.
A) The decision was taken in the first meeting chaired by newly-appointed CEC Rajiv Kumar, who assumed charge of the office on May 15.
B) The two have also decided not to avail exemption from income tax on sumptuary allowance, and will also surrender two of three leave travel concessions (LTC) they get each year.
